Why is Grounding Important?

Grounding. What comes to mind is being in trouble with mom and being “grounded”! This is a different grounding also referred to as earthing. Pretty much the name says it all. Earthing or grounding are about connecting to the earth. Like putting your bare feet in the sand, grass, soil or better yet laying on the ground/ the earth.

When we connect to the earth we can be more present in the here and now and less in our head. We can quiet down inside and just be. Balance and harmony can fill us.

When to Know You Need Grounding

Do you ever feel scattered? You misplace your keys, drop or forget things, and you just have trouble staying focused on a task. If so, you would benefit from grounding. We all have times when we get stuck in our heads and need to come back to the present. Sometimes our thoughts and emotions control us and override our sense of self.

Why Do We Get Ungrounded?

Well, life and the pressures we put on ourselves. Taking on too many tasks and over committing ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally. It can be work or home pressures, typically both.

How Can We Get Grounded?

Spend time outside in nature, take a hike, walk barefoot in the grass, stroll the beach, anything that connects you to the earth. Try this, consciously take a deep belly breath expanding your middle and imagine the breath from the head connecting to the feet with the exhale. On the next inhale imagine the breath flowing from the feet to the head and repeat the cycle. With this exercise you are consciously connecting to the earth and you will notice your nervous system will calm. Meditation is another great way to re-connect. It too slows the nervous system so we can feel more present in our bodies, not living in the mind. That is the connection we need to function more efficiently on a day to day basis.

Some crystals have grounding properties. Often darker in color like black, brown, red/brown. The darker color resonates with the color of the earth and our root chakra. Here are a few crystals to try: Black Tourmaline, Obsidian, Tigers Eye, Red Jasper, and Shungite.

Try a grounding practice prior to starting a big project or for inspiration. You may be surprised how a few simple steps can make a big impact on how you feel and function.
